Adventure Galley. William Kidd was a privateer, the captain of a privately owned warship who has government approval to attack enemy nations’ ships and split their treasures with the government. In the 1690s, he used the 237-ton Adventure Galley to capture ships off Madagascar for England. One of them was carrying treasure for Britain’s East India Company, and England hanged him as a pirate in 1701.
