William King. In 1852, the long-time Democratic Senator from Alabama was chosen as Franklin Pierce’s running mate but was already dying of tuberculosis. He went to Cuba for a warmer climate, and Congress passed legislation permitting him to take his oath of office there. On his return, he died before reaching Washington.
