Franklin D. Roosevelt. Zangara, a mentally ill, 32-year-old bricklayer who told police, "I kill kings and presidents first and next all capitalists," fired several shots from a cheap pistol after Roosevelt spoke at a Miami park on Feb. 15, 1933. He missed FDR but hit five others. Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak was mortally wounded. Roosevelt would not be sworn in as president for another two weeks.
