George S. Patton. During the Meuse-Argonne offensive of 1918, Maj. Patton commanded 304th Brigade of the Tank Corps. After 40 percent of his tanks were put out of action, he charged a pillbox and was wounded severely in the left leg. His orderly, Pvt. Joseph T. Angelo, saved him by dragging him into a shell crater. Fourteen years later, Angelo would be among the "Bonus Army" veterans Patton helped to drive out of Washington, D.C.
