Ernest Rutherford. In 1919, the New Zealand-born physicist bombarded nitrogen gas with alpha particles, producing atoms of an oxygen isotope and protons, a transmutation that is considered the first artificially induced nuclear reaction. Rutherford won the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1908.
