Winfield Scott. A regular U.S. Army officer, his insistence on military discipline and appearance although his troops were often volunteer citizen-soldiers gave him the nickname "Old Fuss and Feathers." He is also known by the more complementary "Grand Old Man of the Army," because his record of active service as a general exceeds that of any other American. First breveted a brigadier general in March 1814, he ended his career as a major general and general-in-chief of the army in 1861.
