Boxers. A secret society in China at the end of the 19th century, they opposed the imperial Ch’ing government and all "foreign devils." In 1900, they staged an uprising, killing foreign missionaries and their Chinese converts. Foreigners dubbed them "Boxers" because they practiced martial arts.
