Nephew. His father was Napoleon I’s brother Louis, although that paternity has been questioned. His mother was the daughter of Napoleon’s first wife, Josephine, by a prior marriage. He was elected the first president of the French Republic in 1848, staged a coup in 1851, and made himself Emperor Napoleon III in 1852. In 1870, he was captured during the Franco-Prussian War.
