John Adams. On June 10, 1775, Adams proposed to the Continental Congress that the New England troops besieging Boston should be considered an army and, therefore, needed a general. Although Adams was from Massachusetts, he realized the colonies had work in a united fashion, and so on June 15 he officially recommended George Washington, a Virginian, be given that command.
