Smallpox epidemic. Known as "The Great Smallpox Epidemic of 1775?1782," it was incubated in military camps and spread by traveling soldiers and by civilians fleeing the war. North American colonists were hit harder than the British. After the outbreak began, George Washington ordered immunization through inoculation for soldiers in his army in the northern colonies, but in the South it spread unchecked. Estimated deaths exceed 100,000.
