Tailor. Apprenticed to the trade at age 14, he never completed his apprenticeship because he fled when he and friends were threatened with arrest after throwing rocks at a tradesman’s house. Eventually settling in Greeneville, Tennessee, he opened a tailor’s shop in his home. His better-educated wife helped him with reading, writing and arithmetic, often reading to him while he worked.
