Vittles. In June 1948, the Soviet Union blocked Western access to Berlin, with the intent of forcing the western powers to allow the Soviets to supply West Berlin with food and other essentials, thereby giving the USSR de facto control of the entire city. The airlift thwarted their plan. The U.S. portion of the airlift was called Vittles, the British part was Plainfare, and Australians called it Pelican.
