Lusitania. Sailing from New York to Liverpool, the ship was struck by a torpedo fired from the German submarine U-20 off the coast of Queenstown, Ireland. After a second devestating explosin followed the torpedo hit, the ship developed a severe list that hampered her crew from lowering lifeboats. Sinking in only 18 minutes, the attack claimed the lives of 1,198 passengers and crew.
