Vlad III or "Vlad the Impaler," was Prince of Wallachia (southern Romania) from 1431 until December 1476.He was given the surname Dracula, from Dracul, the name his father, Vlad II, received when he joined the Order of the Dragon. While Stoker does not refer to Vlad III in his novel, he replaced the original name of his villain, Count Vampyr, with the name Count Dracula, which he discovered while reading Romanian history.
