Prussia and Japan. The ships were completed in France in 1864. Emperor Napoleon III, looking toward post – Civil War relations with the U.S., ordered them sold to other nations. One went to Prussia, the other to Denmark, where Confederate agents surreptitiously purchased it and commissioned it CSS Stonewall. By the time it arrived in the Caribbean, the war was over. It later became the first ironclad in the Imperial Japanese Navy.
