Winettes. Britain developed the first LSTs, in response to prodding by Winston Churchill. Thus, the Boxer-class ships were dubbed Winettes. Crew members had another nickname for the LST – Large, Slow Target. But in truth, very few American LSTs and no British ones were lost to enemy action.
