On January 1, 1945, over 1,000 bombers and fighters launched attacks against Allied airbases in Holland, Belgium and France. The operation had been planned as part of the Ardennes ground offensive the preceding month but bad weather delayed it. The Luftwaffe lost 280 planes while damaging or destroying nearly 500 Allied aircraft. The Allies could replace their losses; the Germans couldn’t.
