The USSR, recognizing a need for manpower against Nazi Germany, recruited many volunteers from the Poles who had been sent to Siberia after the fall of Poland. After Germany reported finding a mass grave of Polish officers killed by Soviet troops near Katyn the Polish Army of the East, stationed in the southern USSR, escaped through the Persian Corridor and joined the Western Allies.
