Governor. Pinchback had been named lieutenant governor of Louisiana in 1871 following the death of Oscar Dunn. On Dec. 11, 1872, he replaced Gov. Henry Warmoth, who had been impeached. Pinchback’s term only lasted until Jan. 13, but he was the first black governor in U.S. history. There would not be another until Douglas Wilder of Virginia in 1989.
