New Orleans riots. On Sept. 14, 1874, an attempt to violently overthrow Louisiana’s "carpetbagger" state government led to rioting. As head of the Louisiana State Militia, Longstreet led troops to break up the street fighting, but his men fled after a 15-minute battle. Robert E. Lee’s "Old War Horse" was wounded and captured by the mob, which was largely comprised of Confederate veterans.
