Philadelphia. On Nov. 10, 1775, the Continental Congress commissioned Samuel Nicholas to enlist two battalions of marines. He made Tun Tavern, a long-established watering hole, his recruitment center. It is still standing and has been recreated in the National Museum of the Marine Corps museum in Triangle, Virginia.
