Chief Joseph (Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekt) of the Nez Perce uttered those words when the people he had led toward Montana were cut off by the U.S. Army just short of their destination. The 1,400-mile march is still regarded as a classic example of how to conduct a fighting retreat.
