Mandarin Chinese. Gung ho is taken from gonghe, the abbreviated name of the Chinese Industrial Cooperative Society. The words mean "work together" or "teamwork." Marine Lt. Col. Evans Carlson heard the term when he was a U.S. military attache in China in the late 1930s. During World War II he adopted it as the motto for the elite 2nd Marine Raider Battalion, and it spread throughout the Corps.
