Chicago. Because many people were coming to the World Columbian Exposition in that city, it was deemed a good time and place to convene a meeting of religious minds. Some newer denominations such as Christian Science were represented, but older, Earth–based beliefs such as those held by American Indians were not. Representatives of such beliefs were not invited to join in subsequent parliaments until a century later.
