Chile. General Bernado O’Higgins, along with General Jose de San Martin, won Chile’s independence from Spain in the Second War for Chilean Independence. He was the illegitimate son of Ambrosio O’Higgins, a Spanish officer who had been born in Ireland, and Isabel Riquelme, daughter of a member of the Chilian council. He ruled Chile from 1817 to 1823.
