William Matthew "Bill" Tilghman (1854?1924), who single-handedly captured the notorious outlaw Bill Doolin, had a long and respected career in law enforcement. In 1915, he wrote, directed and starred in the motion picture The Passing of Oklahoma Outlaws as a response to the movies which were already beginning to glamorize outlaws. He was murdered by corrupt Prohibition agent Wiley Lynn on Nov. 1, 1924, while serving as marshal of Cromwell, Oklahoma.
