Robert Clay Allison (1840?87), who had ridden with Nathan Bedford Forrest during the Civil War, gained a postwar reputation as a dangerous gunfighter, one of the few who could be considered a "fast draw." He seemed to calm down after he married Dora McCulloch in 1881. They had two daughters. On July 3, 1887, Allison was hauling a load of supplies and fell from the wagon when the load shifted. The wagon rolled across his neck, killing him. Some sources claim he was drunk at the time.
