Edward Zane Carroll Judson (1813?86) ran away to sea as a boy and saw service in the Second Seminole War (1835?42) and in the Civil War, after which he began writing for story papers and dime novels under the name Ned Buntline. He persuaded Bill Cody to travel east and appear in a play, Scouts of the Prairie. He continued writing until his death, creating the legendary West that eventually became the image held by the general public (and Hollywood). Once one of the richest men in America, he was nearly broke when he died. His widow had to sell their home.
