After dropping off the A-bomb components at Tinian, Indianapolis sailed to Guam for replenishment and new orders. The ship left Guam for Leyte Gulf on July 28. The torpedoing of USS Indianapolis by a Japanese sub on the night of July 30, 1945, a few days after the ship had delivered atom bomb components, resulted in the U.S. Navy’s worst wartime disaster.
