The Netherlands were part of Spain’s vast empire. Resistance began when King Phillip II of Spain brought the Inquisition to the Low Countries, which were becoming increasingly Protestant. By 1567, Spain sent an army of 10,000 men to hold the area, but the revolt continued until Spain finally recognized Dutch independence in 1648.
