On November 2, 1929, American women aviators including Amelia Earhart, Louise Thaden, and Pancho Barnes, formed an organization for mutual support and the advancement of aviation. Ninety-nine of the 117 women pilots licensed in the U.S. at the time attended the founding, so they named their group the Ninety-Nines. Today it has over 5,000 members from 35 countries.
