Sydney Reilly was born Sigmund Georgievich Rosenblum in Odessa, Russia, in 1874. He fabricated so many stories about himself that it is difficult to separate truth from fiction. Reportedly a spy for Japan during the Russo-Japanese War, he claimed to have been part of meetings of the German high command in World War I and is known to have spied in Russia for Great Britain beginning in 1918. A Russian agent shot him to death in 1925.
