The Battle of the Philippine Sea, June 19?20, 1944, saw the last great clash between carrier-based aircraft in World War II. Japanese pilots no longer enjoyed the advantage of experience over their American counterparts, and US fighter planes now outclassed those of Japan. On the first day alone, 395 Japanese planes were shot down, at a loss of only 20 American aircraft.
