Richard Parker, descended from two Virginia judges, was nearing the end of the regular session of court in Charles Town, Virginia (now West Virginia) when Brown’s raiders seized the U.S. arsenal at Harpers Ferry. The trial lasted just five days. Had Brown’s raid come a week earlier, the court would have been out of session until May.
