Hasan Al-Rammah, a thirteenth-century Syrian engineer is recorded as having invented a working, rocket-propelled torpedo approximately 300 years before the Dutch Eighty Years War, the often-accepted date of the first torpedoes. David Bushnell was the first to apply the word "torpedo" to drifting explosive devices, in 1776.
