King Charles II 1630-1685) instituted the order as a reward to those who faithfully supported him during his exile in France. It was believed to represent the “Oak of Boscobel” where Charles took shelter following the Battle of Worcester in 1651. Knights were selected from all counties of England and Wales. The order was soon abandoned, replaced by “Royal Oak Day” on May 29th, Charles’ birthday.
