The Sultana was a Mississippi riverboat commissioned by the United States Army to transport recently freed Union prisoners of war back north. The ship had a legal capacity of 376, but nearly 2,100 men were jammed on board. About 2:00 a.m., seven miles north of Memphis, Tennessee, the badly repaired boiler exploded, creating an inferno that killed an estimated 1,500 people. Another 300 later died as a result of severe burns.
