Richard F. Outcault (1863-1928) created Hogan’s Alley in 1894 for Joseph Pulitzer’s Truth magazine. A character soon dubbed the Yellow Kid, bald-headed and wearing a yellow nightshirt yellow, soon became the star. His comments, in a ghetto argot, were printed on his shirt. Outcault was hired away by the Hearst papers and the Kid appeared in two competing publications. The sensationalist stories published by Hearst and Pulitzer became known as “Yellow Kid Journalism,” soon shortened to “Yellow Journalism.”
