In 1805, Tenskwatawa fell so deeply into a trance that many feared he was dead. When he finally emerged from the dream state, he announced he had met the Master of Life and told his people that their suffering came from replacing traditional ways with white culture. He led a spiritual revival among his people. He died in November 1836.
