In 1905 eighteen football players died from injuries. That same year President Theodore Roosevelt saw the potential merits of the game and convinced the presidents of the Big Three?Harvard, Yale and Princeton?to save the game by changing the rules to eliminate foul play and brutality. The American Football Rules Committee, created in 1906, reformed the game.
