Thomas Benton Smith (1838-1923) commanded a brigade of the Army of Tennessee. Following his surrender at the Battle of Nashville, Union Col. William L. McMillan repeated struck Smith on the head resulting in serious injuries. Smith lived until 1923 but as a result of his injuries most of his later years were spent in an asylum.
