French cartoonist and caricaturist Emile Cohl (1857-1938) made Fantasmagorie in 1908 for Gaumont in France, generally considered the first animated film. He eventually joined ?clair and moved to their studio in the United States wher he worked on a series called The Newlyweds, based on a comic strip by George McManus. His films for ?clair were the first to be advertised as “animated cartoons.” All but two of his ?clair films were destroyed in a fire just days after Cohl and his family returned to France in 1914.
