Matilda (1102-1167), daughter and surviving heir of King Henry I of England, gained the title Empress due to her marriage to Henry V of the Holy Roman Empire. He died childless and Matilda married Geoffrey V of Anjou. Following a civil war between Matilda and her cousin Stephen, her son Henry was named by Stephen as heir and Henry gained the throne upon Stephen’s death.
