Daniel Edgar Sickles (1819-1914) was a colorful character who survived many scandals. He used the temporary insanity plea in his trial for murdering Philip Barton Key, son of Francis Scott Key who penned The Star Spangled Banner, over Key?s affair with Sickle?s wife. Sickles served as a Union general during the Civil War, commanding the III Corps at Gettysburg where his disobedience to orders resulted in the virtual destruction of the corps. After the war he returned to politics and played a major role in the creation of the Gettysburg National Battlefield Park.
