Long thought to be a place of myth, archaeological work by German merchant Heinrich Schliemann (1822-1890) proved there had been a number of cities located at Hisarlik in Turkey. Wilhelm Dorpfeld and Carl Blegen continued his work. While Schliemann identified the wrong level as Homer?s Troy later work confirmed the site as the site of the city from Homer?s epic poem. Schliemann always claimed The Iliad pointed him to the site but in 1822 Scottish journalist Charles Maclaren, after reviewing available material, published a dissertation on the topography of the plain of Troy that identified Hisarlik as the site of Troy. Still, Schliemann?s pioneering work receives the credit for the discovery.
