Gideon Johnson Pillow (1806-1878) served in the Mexican-American War, being twice wounded. He feuded with General Winfield Scott and was released from the army. During the Civil War his first combat resulted in the defeat of U. S. Grant?s small force at Belmont, Missouri. At Fort Donelson, Tennessee, Pillow failed to exploit a breech in the Union lines, resulting in the capitulation of the post after he and General John B. Floyd fled to Nashville. After his performance at Stones River he was assigned administrative duties. Following the war he opened a law practice.
