Acquired as part of the Louisiana Purchase from France in 1803, the Territory of Nebraska was officially organized with the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. The Homestead Act of 1862 officially opened the territory for settlement, leading to statehood in 1867. A greater influx of settlers came with the completion of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1869.
