Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A fur trader, Solomon Laurent Juneau was born in Montreal and in 1818 settled on the site of Milwaukee and established a trading business. Juneau, who became a U.S. citizen in 1831, laid out the eastern part of Milwaukee in 1835 and became the first president of the village in 1837. He was elected the city’s first mayor in 1846. The capital city of Alaska, Juneau, was settled in 1880 soon after a gold strike nearby by Richard Harris and Joe Juneau.
