Copperheads. “Peace Democrats” were also known as Copperheads. During the American Civil War, Northerners who advocated restoration of the Union through a negotiated settlement with the South was referred to as Peace Democrats. On July 20, 1861, the New York Tribune compared Peace Democrats to the venomous Copperhead snake, which strikes without warning.
