New York. The Hunkers and the Barnburners were two factions within the Democratic Party of New York split over the slavery issue in 1848. They injected the issue into the Democratic National Convention held in Baltimore in 1848 when they both sent delegations. The Barnburners (who were also known as the “Softs” while the Hunkers were called the “Hards”) were firm supporters of the Wilmot Proviso of 1846 that sought to restrict the spread of slavery to newly acquired territory.
